Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theatre in daylight. DuVernay was captivated by the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended it to DuVernay. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful vehicle for social activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious from her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with the extended family of her father located in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. While she was still a student DuVernay was interested in creating for broadcast journalism. She began her career as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of a member on the jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied by journalism and she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She started The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
